Criteria to Consider Before Submitting a Tool for Review
Before you submit a teaching and learning tool for review of intended use, data security, cost, accessibility, and support availability, here are the minimum criteria that a tool must meet before a review can even begin.
Please use it as a preflight checklist to minimize back-and-forth and ensure a smooth submission, leading to faster deployment if the tool is approved.
Purpose
- Meets pedagogical need to enable student success or elevate stakeholder experience.
Student Cost and Funding
- Funding source is clearly identified. Tool is funded by the university, college, department, or students need to pay for access.
Accessibility
- Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) is less than two years old.
- VPAT evaluates tool based on WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 level A and AA standards and demonstrates that it meets accessibility
Ease of Use
- Specifically encourages Universal Design for Learning (UDL) best practices.
- Compatible with all four major browsers: Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari
Access, Data Privacy, and Security
- Login occurs via Single Sign On (SSO). It is a red flag if users must create accounts (username + password) outside of SSO to sign in.
- Built on LTI version 1.3 if integrated directly into Canvas. If the tool is still on version 1.1, a roadmap from the vendor with a clear timeline for updating to 1.3 is required.
Once you are able to confirm that the tool meets these criteria, then please submit it for review. You can also explore the Tool Finder to browse existing tools that may meet your need.
